THE CHAINSAW MAN MANGA PHENOMENON IN BRAZIL

This qualitative study investigates the role of scanlation culture in the reception of manga in Brazil, using the Chainsaw Man viral scan meme as a case study. The research adopts Jesús Martín-Barbero's theory of mediations to examine reader comments from six YouTube videos, in addition to comparing excerpts from the official and altered manga versions. The results show that the scan meme, with its cultural adaptations, generated a sense of identification and affective bonds, but also triggered disputes over the translation's fidelity. We conclude that these practices challenge traditional publishing models and reveal new forms of cultural circulation in digital environments.
