This article focuses on the pilot of the series Mad Men to propose a narrative and stylistic analysis of the episode, dialoguing with a bibliographical excerpt about this television genre. Without losing sight of the importance of the pilot in presenting the serial franchise, the objective is to find and reflect on the themes — sexism, racism, loneliness — introduced from the beginning, understanding them as drivers of the smoke-images that will cross these 1960s in seven seasons, and which have as their maximum embodiment the complex protagonist of Don Draper (Jon Hamm).
